Kathleen Haworth Selected 2002
National Distinguished Principal
In an annual effort to identify
exceptional elementary and middle school principals, the U. S.
Department of Education and the National Association of
Elementary School Principals in corporate partnership with
Annuity Life Insurance Company sponsor the National
Distinguished Principal Award. This annual award rests on these
important goals:
to attain national recognition
for the critical leadership role of public and private school
principals;
to inspire the educational
community to pay tribute to its own outstanding leaders;
to increase public awareness of
the importance of the principalship through broad media
coverage events;
to offer the opportunity for
professionals serving both public and private schools to meet
and work together toward sharing experiences, solving
problems, and meeting common goals.
In June 2002 the NDP Private
School Selection Committee and the Peer Review Panel met to
review all of the candidates for this most honored award. The
Division for Higher Education and Schools of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church In America is please to announce that our
candidate, Kathleen Haworth has been selected to represent
private schools as a 2002 National Distinguished Principal.
Kathleen is the principal of
Laurel Hall School in North Hollywood, CA. She has served at
Laurel Hall School as principal since 1997. Prior to this
current appointment she served First Lutheran in Torrance, CA as
principal.
Mrs. Haworth lists among her
accomplishments the growth of her schools student population
especially in the area of her middle school population. She
established financial stability at the school, a new classroom
building, which includes a science lab, computer lab and
library, and a caring, nurturing before and after school care
program. She also has an extensive summer program at Laurel
Hall. She also lists advocacy for the needs and concerns of her
students and their families among her greatest accomplishments
as a principal.
“From the very beginning of her
tenure as principal of Laurel Hall, Kathleen Haworth has been
steadfast in her determination to create an on-campus
environment of inclusion and accomplishment. In both word and
deed, she has exemplified the model of a natural leader. In
leading by example she has succeeded in instilling a sense of
commitment and purpose in her coworkers – no one questions
that at Laurel Hall, the values of work, faith and community are
bedrock pillars meant to be supported and strengthened, not
doubted or denigrated.”
